Inspired by DIY: Lauren Renfrow Antler Tray

.

By now you know I’m a bit of a thrifty person. I love having beautiful things in my home, without breaking the budget.  By being inspired by other bloggers to create their version of a designer style, I decided to give it a try. You know I’ve done a few tray makeovers, (see here ), but I’ve had my eye on this designer tray by Lauren Renfrow being sold on Layla Grayce for Times Two Designs.   The cost of these trays range from $400-650.00.  Yes.. I know what you’re saying — crazy right?!!  For a tray????? Not Me- not in nooooooo lifetime.. but that doesn’t stop me from liking it and wanting it, but I also knew I had to make it.  It took me some time to scour different thrift stores to find the right size tray, and I found one at Goodwill for $1.75.

I didn’t have any luck finding more antlers, so I used the ones from this project.

I spray painted the tray using Krylon White Gloss, but for some reason there were cracked lines that came through even though I sprayed three coats.  Needless to say I was a bit annoyed.

So to cover this flaw, I used faux marble contact paper (I love this stuff).

It’s a bit of a variance from the designer version, but hey, consider it my designer version.  For the antlers, instead of using gold leaf – I used Krylon Maxx metallic gold – it gave them the brilliant metallic gold shine I needed to accomplish the look.

Next up was assembling them.  I found these 2-hole pipe strap clamps made of galvanized steel at Lowe’s and painted them gold as well.

Used a couple of screws and screwed them to the tray and this is the finished look.

For a cost of $10.00 I have the look of a $600.00 tray

One more look at the designer’s vs mine,

So what do you think of my tray, I’d love to hear your comments.

  1. I like yours much better. I looks less dangerous. The other, I can imagine tripping with it and having a major owie. I also like the marble. Such a great conversation piece.

  2. I have some antlers and I like the shiny gold paint. It is an on going battle to find a paint that looks like real gold or silver leaf. Krylon looks like they nailed it. There is a cast iron Mercury dime over the front of the exterior door here at the old bank and I have yet to find an exterior silver paint that doesn’t look white or like aluminum outside. I want to try silver leafing it because it isn’t very large, but I have an image in my mind of the sheets blowing down the street. I’m still going to try it though. I think you did a really great job of duplicating the Renfrow tray and you always do a terrific job of building and creating something beautiful at a reasonable price. I would like to learn how to gild, it looks tricky but forgiving. It may be one of those things that one needs to just jump into. I think I’ll give it a try soon and order a packet of artificial silver or gold leaf first. I’m thinking I should learn on something like a picture frame. I always enjoy seeing what you are working on, Jamala.

    • Hey Ginene- Thanks a bunch.. (you should definitely give this little project a try) the Krylon Maxx is a real great look. I’ve not done the gold leafing yet either.. I keep saying I want to try it but I don’t want to mess it up.. Maybe you and I could link up and do a gold-leafing – online party. We each pick an item and try our luck – so there we’ll be all in the boat together rowing along.. (let me know if you’d like to -I’m definitely game for it)

  3. Lady, you knocked it out of the park and over the fence!!!! Beautiful and I do love the $10.00 sticker price. Thank you for sharing. I will share with my friends.

  4. I like it! I’m glad I read this post because I JUST found a perfect wood tray from Value Village for $1.50 + was trying to figure out what kind of spray I wanted to use. Thanks for the tips!
