Raising Caine

Hi everyone, I know this is a far cry from home decor and thrift finds, but I just wanted to share a bit of what’s going on with me and a new puppy around the house.  It’s been almost two months since this little “terror” became a member of our family, and life with Caine has not been a cakewalk.  First I had to do some research on Cane Corso dogs.  We’ve always had Rottweilers and this was a breed I knew nothing about.  What I’ve learned so far is they’re very affectionate dogs and love to be near their owners.  According to most owners they are trainable, reserved, even tempered, quiet, stable, and calm.  So far, Caine has most of those traits.  Whenever he sees me pull up or hears my car in the driveway he comes running to the fence to greet me

He’s extremely playful and poor KoKo has to stay in hiding.  He wants to play while Koko, who is much older, is not a playful dog and doesn’t take too well with other dogs.  She’s quite comfortable laying around and following close behind me.  Here they are at the fence and both whine to get to me.  Yes I find this attention quite special and the unconditional love they have for me warms my heart.   I literally was not a happy camper when my husband came home with this dog.  Did our lives change after this?  My husband’s didn’t – but mine did.. because the main caregiver is “ME”.  The best part about having him around is he’s keeping me in check with my walking regimen.  I enjoy taking him for walks.  As we watch him grow, he continues to test Koko.. I guess he calls himself dominating her, but she stands her grounds and gets at him.. of course he’s playing , but she’s not.  For her to be so small, she has the heart of lion.

He likes stepping on her  and being in control, so she goes in hiding but he finds her

In just these few weeks he’s grown double in size.

See how he towers over her now.

Here is some information I learned about the Cane Corso:  It’s an ancient breed, direct descendant of the Roman Canis Pugnax, Roman War Dog of the first century. It was used in the battlefields as an auxiliary warrior and guardian. In the arenas, the Cane Corso was used to fight lions, bears, bulls, other wild animals and even gladiators.  This Italian mastiff was bred to hunt wild boar and today acts as a guard dog. Fiercely devoted to his family, he doesn’t care for strangers or small animals (which I’m hoping since he was raised with Koko this wouldn’t be a problem).   They are more athletic and agile than other mastiffs, he’ll sit at your feet with impressive weight.  He loves to jump and wallow all over me and is extremely lovable.

All my hard work in the back yard has taken a bit of hit.  When Caine comes back there, he walks all on my flowers and lays all over them, so I’m constantly yelling “GIT!!!” – My poor Irises.

He finds things and chews and pulls on them..

And he also found time to “christen it”..smh… oh well..

Next came the hostas.. He’s everywhere and into everything… I’ll be glad when he’s out of the chewing stages and just want to lay around and play guard dog.

All in all… through the chaos.. every morning when I leave to go out, looking at this cutie of a face continues to make me smile and say… awwww…. he wants me to stay and play with him.

I guess you can say… he’s grown on me and I’ve softened up.. (darn it! ) lol.. so that’s life with Caine.. the good, bad, and in-between.  I hope you didn’t mind my brief interruption of this announcement and I’ll be back with my regular program… so stay tuned… lol.. as always.. happy hunting while you thrift your house into a home!

CIAO!!!

  1. I love his color he is a beautiful dog and at least you will not have to worry about bears and bulls. As far as mischief goes the best thing you can do is give him his own things outdoors and indoors. Try out Chuck it brand stuff and the Kong stuff I find both brands to hold up well to big active dogs. Daisy loves the balls and has had some since she was 6 months old and she is 4.

    • LOL!! Yea right.. what a relief.. Thanks lady for the advice.. I’ll go on the hunt for them. I tried to get some good shots (like how you get of your dog – you really catch some beauts) but Caine barely sits still for a minute..

      • You need to train him with treats. Sit and get a treat then wait, wait, wait ok treat. Daisy gets treats during photo sessions lol. Thanks.

        • That’s a good idea… I’ll do that! My sons were always the ones training our dogs…so this is all new to me. Thanks for your advice

  2. He’s so handsome and looks so happy! BTW: the outside of your home is as gorgeous as the inside. Looking forward to future posts!
