DIY Faux Ceramic Planters

Instead of me being a good girl and rolling up my sleeves to begin my paint project, I decided to paint something else instead- you know.. get the small projects out the way- then move on to the biggies (because I hate painting so much, this gave me the mental prep) lol.  I’ve been wanting to try the diy faux ceramic vase to make a couple of planters for some new plants I recently purchased over the weekend.  It was beautiful weekend and I wanted to take my mother out of the house and figured an outdoor nursery would be great.   After leaving the nursey, I popped into a local Goodwill to see if I might find some planters and found one glass bowl and I also got this big one from the yard sale here in town.

To create a faux ceramic vase, you combine a mixture of paint and baking soda.  I had paint samples and baking soda, so I decided to give it a try.  I mixed a small amount of paint with baking soda.  I just eyeballed it, but would say the mixture is 1 part paint and 1 part baking soda and stir.  The consistency will be a bit thicker and grainy looking.  I used a sponge brush and painted the glass.  It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you want to cover the entire glass.  You will need 2-3 coats.  Keep in mind, it dries pretty quickly.

This is how the big bowl turned out.   It has matte finish and a grainy clay-like feel.  I really love it.

For the smaller ones, I wanted to create a bit of a design, so I thought I’d try the paint drip technique.  I had left over black paint, so using a spoon, I scooped some out and drizzled it down the sides and let it move down, while turning the vase to allow the paint to move some.  These are how they turned out.

I got a kick out of how these turned out because they have a cool, abstract, livelier look.

Just a little pizzazz instead of plain glass with rocks at the bottom, not to mention nice for a Spring fresh look on the coffee table.

The total cost of these were $2.00.  So if you have plain glass vases around the house or see some out thrifting, go ahead and give this a try.  I really love how they turned out and how simple this was.

Now, time to get this painting done!  Wish me luck that it won’t take more than a week.

CIAO!!!

  3. Love how this vases turned out, especially the one using the drip technique! This seems like an easy, non costly and quick DIY with a great result. Thanks for sharing the instructions. Can’t wait to find some time to try this!

    • Thank you Besa! Yes. They were definitely fun to make.. i hope you make some and share. Thanks for reading

    • Hey Ruth, thanks.. it is not waterproof unless you spray a protective finish on it..because I needed to wash the bottom and it came right off. But that was using latex paint. Perhaps an acrylic base paint might not be. I used what I had around the house.

  4. I’ve used the baking soda paint on some glass vases I had around the house, but I’ve never seen that drip technique. Those vases turned out gorgeous!! I absolutely love them!

    • Thanks Ora! This was a first for me and I really liked it. The drip was a bit messy but all in all well worth the extra step.

  5. They’re so cool!!! I love the shapes of the pots and that drip technique is great. They look like expensive, high end pieces.

    • Hey Cindy! Thank you..I was hoping they’d have a designer-like feel and you just made me smile .. mission accomplished.
