Good morning everyone! Back again with another update on what’s happening with my One Room Challenge Afro-Chinoiserie Chic Dining Room. If you’re new here from the ORC – welcome to my cyber corner and I hope you enjoy what you read. So let’s jump right in… I wanted to see what the wall sconce shades would look like next to the green wall, and by george, it looks great! It’s a warm tone but that’s ok (even if it is Summer) . Flowers will always brighten things up a bit. I brushed the sconces with a light stroke of metallic gold paint to help brighten up the deep bronze to appear to highlight it.
Once I finished all the painting, I moved the furniture around a bit. Some pieces stayed in the same spot, but the overall new placement made a big difference. Moving the china cabinet to the opposite wall left of the outside door distracted the off balance of the door (at least in my opinion). Also you see that one spot of molding left unpainted.. ugghh.. ran out of paint at that point.. oh brother.. back to the store to get a quart .. tapped the budget again.
I decided to get rid of the one arm chair by removing the arms so I can flank the two sides of the table with all the chairs.
I filled in the holes with wood filler and sanded for a smooth finish. Now I’m ready to get all the chairs painted. (side note: I can’t believe I’m actually working with this stuff, hahaha – wood filler, stain, sanding stuff, – wow)
In the last post I talked about the thrifted, gifted and found items I’m using in the room makeover. I need to add one more thrifted item to the list and that’s this bar cart/serving trolley. It was at the same store I purchased the rods from. I had not idea where I was going to use it, but I knew I couldn’t leave it behind.
This usually isn’t much of my style but when I saw the rattan details on the top, that’s what caught my eye and I decided it may look good in the room. I was also glad about the extra storage unit it had when you slide the top panels open. It was really in need of TLC but overall in good condition. My initial thought was to paint it, but after I got it home and realized it kind of matched the dining set stain wise, I decided against it.
After finishing the art deco cabinet I did for the 2wkfurnitureflip, I made the decision to re-stain it. I sanded it down with the same sanding block then brushed on oak stain. It’s looks sooo much better now. Indeed, this was truly a nice surprise find.
I shopped my home and found the sample of peel&stick wallpaper I ordered when I did this art deco glass cabinet. It was perfect to use inside that drawer for an element of surprise.
It looks almost the same but there’s a slight difference in the pattern style and the gold isn’t as shiny as the other. Can we all agree, it’s got some swank to it now! I can’t wait to style it for the ORC reveal.
So given this cart was $45 and I needed another quart of paint, those purchases put me $16.00 over my $200 budget. Even though technically I was going to spend $200 in addition to what I’d already spent, I decided there was no need to spend $400 on this room, so I included what was already spent on the new chandelier as part of the budget. There was one more item I really, really want but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen (just yet). I’m hoping FBMP will come through for me (again). Otherwise, my spending is DONE (except I’ll buy flowers to add for the reveal) and that’s a treat to myself. Next, week’s post I’ll share the chairs painted and reupholstered, finish unpacking boxes of china, hang drapery and begin to put this room back together. See you next week! Don’t forget to check out the 20 Featured Designers and the rest of the Guest Participants to see how their projects are coming along
You find the most beautiful pieces!
Thanks Lady!! Always on the hunt 🙂
Love your style and can’t wait to see the finished room. I just found your blog and instagram through the One Room Challenge and have so enjoyed your home tour and posts. Thanks.
Hi Deb! Welcome and thank you so much for popping over.. (I love having new visitors/followers and making connections). I’m glad you enjoyed your visit here and thanks for following the makeover.
Cute bar cart! The rattan detail is very cool. You really brought it back to life!
Thank you.. I’m so glad I found this piece. I never knew I needed one until I got this one..
It all looks amazing! That is going to be a beautiful bar cart!
Thanks Nancy! It’s already become a favorite find.. lol.. glad I popped in the store and found it.
Jamala,
That cart looks so good! You really see the potential in things. I like the surprise pattern inside too. Just wondering what is behind the white door? Could it be removed to let in more light and eliminate some of the contrasting white?
Thank you so much Ruth! As for the white door.. ugghh.. it’s my 2nd front porch. It’s a small porch but none the less, they put a door there. I actually want to get another french door for there to give it a more formal look and to match the other set of doors. The price for it is outrageous.. so I’m hunting the secondary market. Fingers crossed.
Great idea to replace with a French door. As to price, I hear you!
