As I’m winding down from 2016 and getting ready for a new year, I thought I’d get a jump start on the table setting for a New Year’s day brunch. Last year I did a New Year’s Eve get-together and … Continue reading

A Room With A View
Leaving Newark and coming to the quaint southern town has been a rewarding decision for Bernie. Ever since we finished her boudoir, we’ve been busying ourselves getting her warm humble abode ready before the holidays approach and I have to admit … Continue reading
Bedroom Retreat Reveal
When Bernadine retired and decide to move south, it was wonderful news to hear. When she commissioned me to help her decorate her home, I jumped at the opportunity. Not only was I excited about working with her, but also because it gave me another reason to shop. The room started with basically a clean slate. The home had been vacant for a couple of years and was left unattended. No color on the walls and there were some antique pieces left behind. This Duncan-Phyfe loveseat was purchased from the home’s estate sale and she wanted to have it reupholstered to use in her bedroom retreat. Lavender was her favorite color and it became the color of choice for the walls and the rest is history.
This was the room at the time of her purchasing the home
I can’t tell you how exciting this project was. I love working with fabrics and new designs so this provided the opportunity to be creative. Bernadine loves antiques but also wanted something new, so we scoured the antique shops, thrift stores and furniture outlets to find the right pieces to blend together. Hours were spent at the fabric outlet picking and choosing the right fabrics for her the loveseat, window treatments and bedspread. Her desire was to have an elegant, yet, functional bedroom – one fit for a “retired queen”. The loveseat has been transformed and the new look is fabulous
The cornice boards were perfect
All fears were put to rest when the installment was complete. Not only was the desired look accomplished, but she is completely happy and satisfied with her new bedroom. Step into Bernadine’s retired new suite!
New bedroom furniture was purchased from Merinos Home Furnishing Outlet. For fabrics, I chose a brocade paisley print along with a green & lavender stripe fabric to accent the wall color. The custom made bedspread and cornice boards were trimmed with the striped fabric that was used to reupholster the loveseat.
To give the loveseat a richer look, it was given a darker stain. The artwork above the sofa (originally hers) is a signed serigraph by artist Alonzo Adams. It is one of her most treasured pieces because it reminds her of her beloved mother who was a quilter.
The richness of these two fabrics together blended perfectly
She loves crystal, so some thrifted crystal dishes and lamps were used in the room
The antique crystal lamps flanking the mirror were scored at one of the Metrolina antique sale dealers.
They originally had a hunter green faux marble base (but a bit of silver spray paint gave them a new look)
After retiring from working in an office the last thing she didn’t want in her home was the word “office”..but wanted a computer station. To solve that dilemna and to keep with the elegance of the room, an antique Duncan-Phyfe drop leaf table (scored at the Metrolina) paired with a ghost chair gave her the perfect look.
Above the chest of drawers is her set of decorative art plates and her Daddy’s Long Legs Angel doll
One more close look at the gorgeous brocade fabric.
The room is a true example of how mixing old and new, blending different patterns (paisley and stripes) you can create a beautiful look without breaking the bank. The owner couldn’t be more pleased with her elegant new budoir – perfect fit for a retired “queen”
I hope you enjoy the new look and if you’re ready for a makeover, let me help you create it..and until next time – always remember – it’s not how much it costs but how you style it. Happy hunting and enjoy thrifting your house into a home!
Smooches!

Happy Friday!
Hey Guys! I guess you’ve been wondering what have I been up to – at least I hope I’ve crossed your minds. :-), if not, it’s cool.. I know you’re just as busy. But your girl has been quite busy, between finishing up the foyer refresh and gearing up for our town’s I2I 49 Miles to Shop Yard Sale – which has now been lengthened to 70 miles!! Isn’t that awesome..!!! If you remember me talking about it last year and how much fun it was – well this year is expected to be even more fun. My sister is headed down to join in on the fun again and we’ve got lots and lots of stuff to sell. By taking on my Living Room makeover, the Budoir Refresh, and now the Foyer, I’m realizing it’s time to let go of some stuff. I’m really trying hard to minimalize my hoarding. It’s something when you remove items to begin a re-decorate project, how your thought changes and you somehow are able to let things go that you’ve not thought to get rid of. That’s where my head is now. It’s great because I just recently won first place in a de-clutter contest that was hosted by Goodwill_SC. Along with gift cards, I also received the book “The Life-changing magic of tidying up” – perfect timing right??!!!
So needless to say I’ve got boxes all around the house and just dumping stuff and I’m vowing to price this stuff to sell because I have to let it go. I want to have less stuff to dust, less stuff to store away and less stuff in the way. Wish me luck on this process because it’s not easy.. trust me.. it really isn’t. But..moving along.. I’m really happy how the foyer is coming along. No major big renovation (because hubby ain’t having that..lol) – just painting and changing the light fixture. I love how just doing those two items made a big difference. I pulled an item out of storage to replace the table you see here. I had no love for the table, but it held “more stuff” that I wasn’t using.. I mean really – why did I still have the last 5 years of telephone books in there.. smh. I found candles that I should have been burning, papers, receipts and just – stuff.
It’s not a big space so I wanted to minimize the items I had in there to make it appear more spacious. I had a rococo style mirror and console table to sell, but the buyer decided not to take it. I was going to put it in the yard sale then I took another look at it and decided to use it in my space. Reason #1 – no drawers to hold “stuff” and reason #2 – I love it. Here is the before:
Isn’t that a sweet looking mirror.. I’m not feeling the black or the shabby look of it though..
This is the console table. Black did nothing for this piece not to mention the beautiful rose tone marble top that was on it. They both got a new look with my faithful can of spray paint. I’ll show you the after next week. I want to finish up the foyer and then surprise you 🙂
That’s all for now, and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you next week! Oh and if you’re wanting to travel to the Yard Sale, hop over to the website and read all about it. I’d love to see you there. But in the meantime.. Happy hunting.. Smooches
