Refreshing a Guest Room During a Pandemic

A Covid Refresh

Good morning everyone…. again, I’ll start by saying I hope all is well and thank you for taking time out to read and comment on the blog.  It really means alot to me to know you still find me exciting enough to follow along.  I have to admit this force stay-at-home has it’s benefits, because the more I’m home the more I’m realizing some decor changes needed along with a bunch of de-clutter.  Summer is almost over and I realized I really haven’t spoken much on the blog (again – shame on me).  I know many have been on lockdown and working from home which I thought was pretty cool because you can get some things done while working from home.  When you think of it.. imagine how much you save on time, gas, lunch, parking, and other miscellaneous spending you do while out and about.   Although I haven’t been too busy on the blog (partly because of timing.. I’m still holding down 2 jobs), but I have been actively involved with some of my other social media venues.  I’m a member of a large Facebook group of Afro-Bohemian decoristas and it’s been giving me the itch to go that route in another room.  My living room is basically the only room that I consider boho inspired, but now I want more.  I love the laid back, casual look that’s styled with an eclectic touch.  With that in mind I chose to neutralize the guest suite and create an accent wall.  Taking you back to when I decided to re-decorate my sons’ room after they flew the coup, I gave the room this look below (you can see the before of this before here.)

I enjoyed the look for a while, until I found this vintage gravel art (you all remember these right – from the 60’s right?) on FB marketplace and knew it was time to take the room in a different direction.  The piece didn’t blend at all with the style of the room (especially curtains).  I’d been wanting to try my luck at using dropcloth curtains and when I hung the art, I knew the linen look of the drop cloth would be great with an afro-boho mono-chromatic look.

I purchased the drop cloth from Lowe’s and bought the longest size available.  These offered the casual carefree approach I wanted in the room.  To install them, it was pretty simple… I did wash them prior to hanging (which I highly recommend.).  To complete the look I shopped my  home and found a few other small items from thrift stores.  My biggest expense was this jute rug.  I was able to splurge because I sold the existing rug to help balance the budget of the refresh.  It was well worth it because this room is a heavy traffic area and jute is extremely durable.   So, here’s the tour of the “keeping busy during Covid-19” re-fresh space.

I made new pillows using African mud-cloth.

I love the fringe trim on the rug.

The etagere was re-styled to incorporate a few family photos

This is a full view of the window treatment using drop cloth.

I was able to finally hang my favorite Josephine Baker art that once hung in my office.  The other art was a signed lithograph I purchased a while back at Restore Habitat for $10.00

The bright airy feeling is more casual and now I feel the room reflects more of my eclectic style.

A few new dresser accessories were added.  This vintage afro-american bust was a fantastic score I purchased from Dressing Rooms Interior and this antique mirror hangs to accent the old world charm.

My biggest impact was the black accent wall in the color Domino by Sherwin Williams.  I absolutely love it!! I don’t know what took me so long, lol.   I ordered new bedding from Overstock and JCPenny and made another accent pillow from left over fabric from my son’s drapery.  Another favorite art piece was brought out of hiding to camouflage the “thorn in my side” door.  I was happy it’s finally found a new wall to adorn.

For the bedside tables, I used square brass tables I previously had and was thrilled when I scored these matching lamps pre-covid.

They were perfect for the room.

I finished the look with the swayed basket wall (another trend I’ve been wanting to do) – and it was fun hanging.  Almost like putting a puzzle together.  I was just surprised I had enough baskets on hand.

The cowhide rug was another added touch of boho

At night, the black adds a more cozy warm tone to the room

After loving this room and photographing it… I realize one small detail was missing.. and if you know me.. I’m sure you know what it is.. .. Leopard….

Ahhhhh.. now it’s perfect – LOL!   Ok guys.. I know this was kind of long, but I hope you enjoyed the tour and new look of the room.  I’ll come back with a post of all the terrific finds in detail as to where I got them and how much was spent on the refresh.  You know I love to inspire you to create a look for less and with what’s happening today, it’s a great time to think outside the box if you’re wanting to redecorate your home and not break the bank.  As I always say – happy hunting while you thrift your house into a home.

CIAO!!!

  1. Wonderful redo!!! As the other ladies have said…your guest room is beautiful. Well done and I am looking forward to reading about the your finds.

  2. I stand by what I previously said: you’re never going to get your guests to leave. This is a whole different spectacular and I love it. I’ve never seen a basket wall done this way and it’s wonderful….the whole room is.

  3. WOW!!! WOW! WOW! I luvvvv this room. It’s beautiful. That black wall is amazing and that photograph btwn the beds is simply perfect (the yellow lady). Ohhh and the swayed wall! Gorgeous! …I’m running out of adjectives for this stunning room. I am sooo so inspired. Thanks for sharing

  4. Even before reading Neti’s comment, I too was thinking love, love, love! The black wall/door camouflage is a very clever solution. The way everything flows across the wall – birds, yellow skirt, baskets is just beautiful. I like both leopard and cowhide but never thought they could be combined. The marbled lamps further add to the luxury of the look of the bedding. You’ve outdone yourself on this one Jamala!
