$100 Room Challenge – Week 4

I could strangle myself for letting the first week drag without accomplishing hardly anything because I’ve been busting my butt to make up for it – like mom said.. hard head makes a soft behind..lol. oh well.  I’ve made much progress.  First I have to say thank God I didn’t hang too much wallpaper before I realized I needed to remove the prior paper.  I thought it was going to be a tough and tedious job, but it wasn’t.  The peel and stick was durable enough and allowed me my mistake because I pulled it off and needless to say it pulled at the paper and I was able to salvage what few pieces I did attach.  Glad I made the decision proceed ahead.  After hanging the paper, my next task was the brass beast – antique chandelier.  My gosh was that the most tedious yet rewarding project.  Between the dust and aged patina, this kitten needed a cleaning.  So me and barkeepers friend spent almost an entire night getting it done.  Reminds of the time I spent working on the brass antique coat rack that I brought back to life and you can see it here.

I went through my fabric stash and found another tropical print I had.  Also I went to a thrift store that has fabric.. not always the best selection but none the less they do carry fabric and fringe.  I was able to find a piece to blend with the tropical print I already had to create a window treatment.  I wanted a solid for the window since the shower curtain is bold in pattern.  This is the combination I was able to pair.  The cost of the window fabric and fringe was $12.00 (I know.. ubelievable right – lol).. but needless to say I’m pretty nervous about how this is going to look.  I love having different patterns blended together, but this is a bit scary for me.. if it doesn’t work out – oh well.. it’s fabric I already had and tried to put to use.

Then I needed to create shelving, so with a shopping list in hand, I headed to Lowes to get socket cup replacements, wood, a couple cans of gold spray paint and brackets.  Total spent was $30.00  I already had stain, so I applied an ebony stain to add some depth to the room.  I painted the brackets gold.  Also I painted the mini blind and existing rod metallic gold.

I wanted a rustic look for the boards, so didn’t mind the streaking on the wood.

Here’s the blind hung and it’s paired nicely with the wallpaper

Sorry for the crappy night photos but all my work is done at night (I have 12hr work days).  I’ll have much brighter pics on reveal day for sure.

So far, total spent is $54.00 – so I was able to splurge on a new faucet.  It took me over the budget just a tadbit, but it was worth the additional $20.00 I went over.  Hubby hung the light tonight and the faucet will be replaced tomorrow.. (we both have late hours) but I’m thankful he’s tackling those for me in the pinch.

While he’s hanging that, I pulled this little table out to use and it needed some pick me up.

I had this marble contact paper which I also used inside the cabinet and touched the wood up with the ebony stain.

Well that’s enough for now.. I have to get back to the project because I head out of town on Friday… smh.. (poor planning), but it’s all good.. because I’m coming back to a refreshened bath.  I hope you’re enjoying this challenge so far.  Next week is the big reveal.

  1. This mix of patterns is so good! The light fixture cleaned up beautifully- I love to use Barkeepers Friend too. And painting the mini blinds gold was brilliant!

  2. Jamala, It is so interesting to read about your process, and inspiring to see that it takes a some trial and error even with a plan. What a great idea to spray paint the blinds. I think the window treatments will look lux.

    • Hey Ruth! Thanks… it truly is trial and era but glad I’m learning along the way. This is where my “go with the flow” design style kicks in. I’m happy to hear you like the fabric choices, so let’s keep our fingers crossed it’ll all come together. I’m out of funds so everything else is from around the house in my stock pile. See you next week for the reveal. Stay well my friend
