$2.00 Tuesday

Sprucing up a Vintage Atomic Planter

Good morning and I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday and day off.  It’s been a bit since I’ve posted a $2.00 Tuesday, so I thought I’d share one today.   If you recall in this video I made “Thrifting Small Town” you’ll see what I bought and notice this vintage atomic plant stand was one I snagged for $2 bucks.

As you see it looks like it had seen better days.  The entire frame was heavily rusted and in need of some TLC.  I could tell once it was given a facelift it would make a wonderful planter.  The first thing I did was  clean it.  I used a steel wool brush to scrape off the loose rust and then gave it a strong sanding with sand paper.  Afterwards, I taped the middle of the legs as I saw they were of a different color.

I sprayed it with two coats of metallic gold and added black on the legs middle feature and ball feet.  I thought it could use a bit more of “something” to have my own afro-boho style for it.  I took some leftover mudcloth from the diy planter  in the ORC, cut it into strips and wrapped the top rim with it.

Now it feels at home and perfectly blended with my home interior style

***** a little secret**** The planter is an oversize candle lantern.  There’s big plastic jug inside to house the plant which is currently rooting.

I really love it painted the black and gold.  The pattern of the mudcloth enhances the colors.

Not bad for $2.00 right – especially considering there’s  one listed on ebay for over $200.00..  So next time you see a rusted planter, look beyond the yuck and be inspired to create a look of your own.   Cheap finds are out there.. just remember.. happy hunting while you thrift your house into a home.

CIAO!!!

  1. This turned out really cute. I love spray paint and the changes it can make to almost anything. I try to keep a few cans in different colors on hand for my projects. I need to figure out how to make some large plant stands for outdoors that will hold terra cotta pots that around 15 – 18″.

  2. You’re a Thrift Score Genius and make the finds a lovely addition to your beautiful and unique home. Thanks again for great inspiration.

  3. You are just TOO creative!!!!!! How do you come up with these ideas?!?!!?!? You just make something out of what others would see as absolutely nothing! You see FAR beyond the face value!!!!!

I enjoy reading your comments
