Monday Mix

Hey Everyone!!!  Once again, I’m wishing you a happy, healthy and wonderful New Year!  Thanks a million for following along in 2015 and I look forward to what 2016 has in-store for us to share with one another.  For my first post of the new year, I’d like to talk about being eclectic and venturing outside the norm.  So many times, we are stuck in the mindset, “things HAVE To MATCH”.  Well it may be true for 90% of our lives, but when it comes to table settings,  I think we can break the rule- well at least I’m going to break it.. and I’ll show you how.

mixitup12.1

Many times, I’ve gone to estate sales, thrift stores, garage sales and would see a plate, saucer, or cup and love the pattern but often times, it’s not a complete set.  So, I decided to mix it up!  I found different patterns that tend to blend and decided to create my own eclectic setting.  I started with these nicely patterned placemats I stumbled across at Walmart.  I’m glad I ventured to that isle and found them.

mixitup

Not bad right?  At $1.99 each and having the perfect metallic gold finish, I figured they would pull the look together.  Modern placemats mixed with thrift score dishes would create a beautiful table setting.  Next I added gold crackled charger plates, which were $3.00 for the set of six at Goodwill. Then, I layered the plates and here is the finished look.

mixitup8

I love soft floral pattern dishes and by using pastel blends of similar looks I was able to mix pieces for a cohesive style.  The dinner plates were about $1.50 ea, the bread plates were between $0.50-$0.75 ea, the brass napkin rings were found at Goodwill for $0.59 each and never used.  The white linen napkins belonged to my grandmother.

Also featured in my setting are limoges bone dishes, which are rare items to find and they blend with the floral patterns.  Limoges is a delicate fine bone china made in Limoges, France and began being manufactured in the late 18th century.  You can read more about its history here.  At the turn of the century, bone dishes were used to hold discarded chicken or fish bones, because it was considered improper to allow bones to remain on your main plate as it appeared to be an unsightly mess (the Victorians were very neat), henceforth, the use of the bone dish.

I also found the crystal (dumbbell shape) knife rests years ago and purchased them from an antique shop.  Knife rests are rarely used these days, but they are very handy when eating.  They offer a more convenient place to rest your knife while not in use, instead of leaning it on your plate.  Lastly, the gold flatware was a wedding gift.  Hard to believe I’ve had them almost 30 years.

mixitup5

As you see, you can create a pretty, delicately balanced table setting using thrift store and estate sale finds by mixing patterns.

mixitup3

The cute little place card is made of porcelain and I found the set at an antique shop about 20 years ago, when I was hosting tea parties.

mixitup7

This is the complete set  –  Isn’t it the cutest.. Just use a sharpie to mark on them and wipe off with water..

mixitup17

I finished the look with depression glassware I inherited from my grandmother.  She had a complete service for twelve with water goblets and wine glasses, plus six smaller glasses (which I used for the children), along with the pitcher, salt & pepper shakers and two serving dishes.  It’s really a nice set, so I consider myself blessed to have it.

mixitup16

You see how mixing patterns, styles and eras could blend together to make a beautiful setting?   Not only does it look pretty, but it also adds a bit more interest.  Have you ever mixed patterns to create a table design?  If not, would you?  If so please share – I’d love to see it.

I hope this has sparked an interest and the next time you see a pretty plate, get it and build on it to create your own blend of tableware.

I hope you enjoyed my Mix It Up tableware?  If so, let me know….  As always, remember, beauty doesn’t have to be costly.    Thanks for reading and until next time..  Smooches!

Friday Finds

The time is approaching again for our town’s 2nd Annual I-2-I 49 Mile Yard Sale and needless to say I’m excited about it.  Last week I had the privilege (as HE called it – WHAT EVAH!) to accompany the hubby on one of his annual golf tournaments in Tennessee.  I’d never been to Tennessee and thought it’d be fun to go thriftin’.. I mean let’s face it.. I have no real interest in golf – but I was totally excited to see what I’d find in another state.  So I googled the thrift stores in the area.. and LUCKED UP..  Too bad we didn’t bring a truck, because I’ve got some goodies to show you…here are some of the items I found..

Item #1  – This pair of wooden/rattan end tables… for a whopping $20.00

Item #2 – this vintage wooden lamp – $10.99  (WOW)

Item #3 – a vintage club chair.. $28.99  (What a Steal!!)

Item #4 – another chair.. this little find could use a cleaning, but no tears and guess what – $14.99

Item #5 – it must be chair season.. because look at this chair.. $48.99

Item #6 was this ultra comfy sofa in the most prettiest soft bluish grey color for $164

This was fun trip and I look forward to going again..(of course I got that “Oh brother” look from him – but do I care- NOPE!) I’ve got a few more items to show that I brought home and I’ll show those next Friday.

If you’re in the area.. Come on the thrifting trail at the 49mile yard sale.. You never know what you’ll find..

Now, if only I can get lucky with the winning lottery numbers and pick some good numbers I’d really be a happy camper.. In the meantime..

HAPPY THRIFTING!!

Thrifty Thursday

Hello, hello, hello… I know – it’s not thursday.. (but that’s the day I found my project) .. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything.. I had to take to hiatus from blogging.  Even though time changed and our days got longer, it stills seems like they’re going too quick – Feels like I’m running out of time..  Work, home, cook, projects, exercise…etc..etc..etc..next thing I know it’s after midnight and time to go to bed to start all over again.. (where does the day go????) …  My cyber-friend Miss K over at Pure&Complex already gave me my frowny face.. Where have I been scolding… chuckles.. thanks “K” for missing me.. My brother came for a surprise visit and it was wonderful time spent with my little darlings.. Ava and Laylah.. I even played hooky from work to escape to the zoo with them.. A trip well worth my time off

Karriem met a new friend.. who he was hoping wouldn’t lick him in the face..lol..

Needless to say I miss them already….   after that.. I had yard work to do.. uggghhhh… I truly regret not getting the leaves up sooner.. but – oh well.. no need in crying over spilled milk..  That alone took a few hours after work to get done.    My chair project is almost done.. Yipppeeeee…I’m the one holding up the last part.. I have to refinish the wood frame.. so that’s my next step. I can’t wait to show you the finished product.  In the meantime.. I did come across this cute vintage lamp while thrifting at Goodwill.

Not bad for $8.75.. I think it’ll be great for a new spring look.   My only dilemna was the shade.. I’m not big on the shape or pleats…   I found another one in my storage area.. and decided to to use it instead.   It had seen better days, but I figured – it’s worth a try..  I didn’t do too bad on my kitchen lamp shade (if you missed it you can see it here) so I decided to give this one a whirl..

I’ve been leaning towards toile fabric- so I decided to give it a try.  First I laid the fabric out and placed the shade on top and rolled it across the fabric, marking as I roll it..

I used a hot glue gun to adhere the fabric to the shade.. Be very careful with that glue gun, because it’s easy to wind up with this…  Yeeeouuuuuchh!!!!!!

Luckily I leave a bottle of AloeVera gel in the fridge to help with burns. If you haven’t tried it..trust me, it works great on burns.  It took me all of an hour to complete the new shade  and I must say.. Not bad!

I think the toile fabric did better justice with this lamp..(I just hope toile is not out of style – lol)

The painting was a another Goodwill find for $4.00.  A quick coat of white paint gives the boring frame a fresher look (as you see the wood frame did nothing for this painting)

For under $15.00 I created a quick inexpensive new look for the console table.  Next up – I’m also doing a 30-day makeover challenge with other bloggers..which will be another quick update of a chair that sorely needs some attention.  I’m late in the game to start but I’ll have it finished (fingers crossed) ..lol… well that’s what your thrifty girl has been up to.. and what about you..?  What are your upcoming projects.. Do share..I’d love to hear about them..

Tah-tah..As always… Your thrifty Gal

Fab Find Friday

Happy Friday everyone – I have to say I’ve been feeling a little bluesy – not the emotional kind bluesy – but the music tunes bluesy.  I thought I’d share one of my favorite tunes with you in this post.  Koko Taylor, who is the Queen of the Blues sings this song which reflects how I felt at the time I found this week’s fab find.   They call me the “Hunter” ! cause I’m always on the hunt for some fab finds, thrifty deals and terrific scores.  But before I show you, I would like to share some terrific news!  I won’t be doing too much blogging in the next coming weeks (please don’t get too excited about that part -hahaha) buuuuuttt.. guess what???  I’m opening a shop  – Yayyyyy !!!!  Yes, finally YourVintage Girl is back in business.   We (meaning me, my sister Amina and our dear friend/ business partner Renee ) have decided to open the second location of Pieces of Time Antiques.  We have a space in new Jersey – and now one in South Carolina.  So I’ll be busy setting up shop, but I’ll touch base with you from time to time – so please – don’t forget about me..  🙂

Ok..let’s move on to my Hunted Item –  I’ve haven’t been getting too lucky lately but just when I was ready to give up shopping at this particular Goodwill, my woman’s intuition decided to give it one more try.  I popped in there, walked straight to the back and look what I found sitting on top of a table – all by it’s lonesome self – waiting for me to strike – the catch that I was after….

O00ooo weeee… ain’t He sweet!!!       A Franco Albini pouff ottoman… Talk about a Teeeeerific Score!!  Remember I already had one that I posted about here.   The price was even of a shocker — $9.75  Can you say WHAT!!!! SHUT THE EFEN DOOR!!!!  – cause that’s exactly what I said…   naturally I gave it a quick inspection.   The only thing wrong was this little paint splash – which will be removed.

Ain’t no  need to hide – ain’t no need to run – cause I’ve got you in the sight of my — Luuuv gun  😉

I love these ottomans  and so does my twin.  She’s been wanting one. .. so now I have one and she has one !! Just in time for our birthday – so pre-Happy Birthday Amina!!  It’s Yours!!

So… I guess I’ll dub myself the “Hunter”  – thanks to Koko and her bluesy song.  I hope you all have a good-feeling bluesy weekend!  Smooches!

Monday Makeover – Part 6

Good morning everyone.. I hope you had a fantastic weekend!  Today’s segment of Monday Makeover features this table  I came across at Goodwill last week.  It was marked $4.75.  I dawdled around trying to decide whether to buy it or not, but since it was Tuesday (senior discount day) that means 25% off which would put it slightly under $4.00.   So, what the heck,  I bought it.  (btw.. Mom was with me)

I found this tray for $2.25 a while back…  ( I love these trays)

I decided to revamp the table this weekend.. First I had to disassemble it..

small table2

The brass was tarnished quite a bit

small table1

These were the decorative backings on my dining room chairs.   After the makeover, (if you missed it click here to view) I decided to leave them off, but,  figured they’d come in handy for something else.

It pays to save things , because you never know.   My goal was to spruce up this bland table, perhaps add a little more pizzazz.

I chose Krylon navy blue and Rustoleum metallic bright gold to kick it up;  the ornaments added the perfect touch.    Here is the table’s new look

The bamboo tray was revamped with a new look as well.  I really enjoy working with trays and love how this one turned out.  I spray painted it with the brassy gold and of course, used more of the wallpaper samples (I have so much of it – I need to use them.. remember – as I said – I’ll be happy to share – just let me know)

My intention was to use it on this table top, however, it was too big..  But guess what?  It fit perfect in between the top and the little rack.  So, I used it as a makeshift drawer.   Here is the table now

Doesn’t it look a thousand times better!!

The black curly wrought iron plant stands didn’t match too well –  A quick spray gave them a brighter look

The gold gives them a more richer appeal (mind you I paid $5.00 for the pair at a yard sale about a year &  a half ago)

This tray went from Plain to Pretty

And the table went from Terrible to Terrific!

Have you recently given an item a new look?  If so, please share
