How to Makeover an Art Deco Cabinet

Monday Makeover

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a makeover and I was glad to be able to finally share this art deco cabinet with you.  I purchased it a while back at this sale and once it was delivered I had to meditate on the look I wanted it to have.  The problem was, my dining room set is Oriental and this cabinet is Art Deco (totally different), but I really wanted it.  As you see, the cabinet was in dire need of TLC.  The wood was dry and scratched, the glass shelves were missing and interior had what appeared to be water stains.  All in all, for $40 it was definitely worth investing in.

Poor baby (left all alone needing a good home).  I had to remove another piece of furniture in order to have it, but I was ready to have this one because it’s perfect to house my vintage glassware collection.  First I washed it using Murphy’s Oil Soap.  I didn’t realize the inside was lined in a very fine silk fabric and as I washed it, the fabric tore off in shreds.   But none the less, it came off.

After washing it, I used two (ebony and walnut) stains to restore the damaged wood area.  I applied a couple of coats, letting each coat completely dry before applying another.  The bottom had some scuffing and I just gave it a light sanding to smooth the area out.  After the staining was done I applied two coats of Old English lemon oil to bring back the shine.  The other dilemma was the interior.  I ordered glass shelves from our local glass company and the cost was $30.00 (easy fix).  To line the cabinet, instead of paint or stain, I wanted something that would really stand out and make it pop so I did some research for art deco wallpaper.  I worked with Coloritto Etsy shop and ordered this geometric wallpaper.  Total cost was $43.00.  I was nervous about it, but I have to say I’m digging the new look.

The company was extremely customer friendly and worked with on measurements to get the right cut.  I would highly recommend them and their product.  side note (this is not a sponsored post)

Very bold and I like how the backdrop makes the glasses standout.  Adds a bit of drama (don’t cha think?)

Even the crystal stemware looks more elegant inside here

The wood now has a nice smooth and even finish.

For the wooden inlay pieces I used the minwax stain pen.. (it’s a great tool for small areas)

The closed middle interior was completely stained with ebony.

Side view to see how I was able to line the pattern

The mirror above was purchased from Pieces of Time Estate Sale.

I enjoy peeking in the dining room seeing this cabinet back to looking grand.

In a loving new home.

So, what’s your take on the cabinet?  If you like this and are inspired by Art Deco, I’ve created a Pinterest Board to follow and pin from.  I’m taking my dining room refresh in baby steps and trying to keep it more neutral (except for the cabinet).  I know it may appear I’m all over the place here, but it’ll all come together (fingers crossed).  Luckily I thrift my house into a home which won’t break the bank – right!?  In the meantime – Happy hunting while you thrift your house into a home!

CIAO!!!!

  3. You did a beautiful job Jamala bringing the cabinet back to life. I think the mix of styles and decades in the room makes it more interesting. You have a talent for combining diverse elements into a harmonious style.
