How to Decorate with Thrift Finds

New thrifted Decor Pieces

Hey everyone!  I hope you’re all still doing well Last month we had our town wide yard sale and even though we set up to sell items, I had to make my way around to see what else was out there.. (after all I’m thrifter too!)  I saw this big wooden bowl and really liked it.. I thought to myself – too bad it had a crack in it.. (but as you see someone tried to  glue it back together).  If you recall back in this post, I spoke about having repaired items in my home and how sometimes, it really doesn’t phase me.  Well I thought about that post and realized, I like this bowl so what the heck.. get it.  The seller charged $5.00 and I thought it was a fair price.  I had no idea what I would do with the repaired wooden bowl but I felt I’d find something to do with it.

Then a couple weeks later, I went thrifting and found this wooden bowl for $12.00.  Wooden bowls are good for Fall accents so I’m thinking they could be added to the living room.

I honestly don’t do all the pumpkin & leaves stuff for seasonal changes.  I’m usually just a Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter kinda girl.. just change a few things to warm/cool a space (not my entire home either).  But my living room has been the same since last Fall and I haven’t done much, however, I was thinking it’s time to ditch the blue&white in here.  So these bowls actually came in handy.  For the big bowl, I needed to camoflauge the yellow glue (especially the outside area). I was able to pluck some of it off (very carefully) and then I used some ebony stain to see if it would downplay it a bit – and this is how it looked.  Not 100% but at least it’s not screaming yellow glue- lol. I left the inside alone because what I was using it for would not be noticeable.

I found a set of three new planter pots in black&white at another thrift store for $12.00 and thought they’d look good in here.  I switched out one pillow on the chaise to tie in the black/white.  Also I figured out a good use for the big wooden bowl in this space.  I have been really good at curbing my urge to buy while out shopping.  After realizing how much I accumulated over the years and sold at the yard sale, I just don’t want to keep adding until I get rid of more stuff.  But who am I kidding.. (lol)..  Anyway here’s a few small changes I did with the wooden bowls as my accents.  I removed the amber leaf dish, added a wooden mask and calligraphy brush to re-style the coffee table.

I’m going to keep my Viking candy dish displayed here.. (it’s a favorite)

I removed the blue & white planter and used the newly found black one on this table.  You can see the pillow switch in the backdrop

Here’s a closer look at another play of patterns that I love doing.

The big wooden bowl became a way to display some recently bought vinyl records

Notice the glue is barely visible.  Remember I’ve been showcasing how to style your music in your decor, so this helped me display my albums without hanging on the wall.

See how the two bowls added the Fall warmth to the area and also keeps with the Afro-Boho style of the room.

Here’s another look back at how it was before and see how simple changes can be done without breaking the bank.

I realize I’m a bit late with the Fall décor post (compared to other bloggers), but I wasn’t in the least bit rushed.  With things happening in this world, I’m not rushing none of my time to do anything.. I’d rather take things slowly and enjoy the “whatever” moments.  Even if I stumble on something broken but fixed – so be it.. I may buy it again and add it to my decor.

Also I’d like to share some pleasant news – I was honored to be featured on ReflektionDesign Blog for blog her series “How We Live”

I’d love for you to hop over to read the feature and learn more about me.  Also, let her know “Jamala” sent you :-).  Simply click here and enjoy.  Well that’s all I have to share for now.  I pray you all stay safe and healthy throughout the upcoming holiday season and as always – happy hunting while you thrift your house into a home!

CIAO!!!!!

  1. Love the transition you made. The chunky wood bowl was a great find even with the glue. Sometimes just a small change is all we need for a change of seasons. I use to rearrange the furniture every few months but I finally got over that.

  2. I am in love with your accessories! The big bowl is perfect for albums and would be good for magazines too. Hope you sold lots at the garage sale.

    • Hey Ruth! Thank you so much.. yes I actually thought about magazines as well (great minds think alike😉) .. and a few other goodies to throw in there. I’m glad I got it. As for the yard sale, yes..we dld very well.. but still have more left over lol… but it’s all good. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving
