How Black makes an Impact

If I was to tell you that thrifting your house into a home would happen overnight and just a few quick trips to a thrift store and BAM – your home is done.. then I’d be telling you one big fat lie.  It doesn’t happen that way AT ALL.  When I decided to start gravitating my style to a more eclectic look, I knew it would take a while and I’ll be switching items (making a few mistakes along the way) and unlimited trips to various thrift stores.  But that’s great for me because I enjoy the thrill of the hunt.  I was looking back at a few pictures of how my Living Room has evolved over the past two years and I’m amazed at the progress made.  Now I’m truly smiling at the outcome and completely satisfied.  This is how it looked when I first began the transition.  I moved items around, brought in another etagere to display my stereo system and hung the rug on the wall.  I kept thinking something is missing behind the chaise and realized – plants were needed.

Here I added plants, another rug and the tassels on the sconces.  Notice how I’m layering items now (let’s face it.. I’m a maximalist)

I wanted to make another change for more boldness and decided to go black.  I painted my French doors and an accent wall around the fireplace.  Again, nothing much changed except the plants, a pillow or two, and coffee table accessories.

Never under estimate the power of paint, plants and pillows.  Three small items that make a big impact to create a new look.

Here is the fireplace wall.  The juju hat really pops against the solid black.  I changed the items on the mantle but there’s still some tweaking to do.. but I love the new look.

Remember the vintage swag light I purchased here?  Well, my initial thought was to take it apart and change the fabric on the inner shade.  Once I started, I realized I’d have to dissect the entire light and that was NOT happening.  But I did finally decided where to hang it.

The reason I wanted to change the fabric was because if you look closely, there’s some type white band around the inner shade, not sure how they got it on there, but realizing the intense drama of changing it, it’s best I leave it be.  Not to mention.. (I’m not a perfectionist – I won’t pass on an item if I really like it because it’s not perfect).

Here’s how the light looks when it’s on.  At night, it throws off a sultry kind of mood in the room.   I freaking love it!

As I walk into the living room and see this view.. it’s pleasing to see the gradual changes I’ve made to create a whole new look without breaking the bank.

I guess this is why living the lifestyle of the thrift and famous suits me best, because I like change and had I spent snoogies of money on furniture and decor, I’d have to live it for a long time and wouldn’t change a thing.  Not to mention, it’s more exciting because you’ll never know what you’ll find.  As always – happy hunting while you thrift your house into a home!

CIAO!!

    • Hey Elle! Thank you so much. I have to admit, it’s where I’m finally saying I love it alot lol..

  1. Girl, these pics are gorgeous! I feel like I’m in a posh and cozy haven. I believe that decorating is a way for one to express their personality and spirit. When you walk into a room, you should literally feel the energy based on how it’s decorated. I agree that it is a process and takes time but is necessary in order to achieve the look and feel you want. You do such beautiful work; thanks for sharing your gift with the world : )

    • Hey Ruth! Thanks..I actually hadn’t planned for it to be there but when I walked in the room.. my eyes went up and I said to myself.. what the heck..give it a try. I did and I liked!

  2. The progression from picture to picture is fascinating; the changes aren’t huge, but the impact is. Love it!!

    • Hey Cindy.. Thank! Yea, as I went back, I was realizing the slow and steady changes were actually coming together. I’m glad you love it..
