Stripe it Out

Hey Y’all!  Real quick question—  Have you noticed how much stripe taper candles cost..  Geez louise… look here and here..  and  World Market  has them on sale for $3.00 but that’s for a pair.  Well, remember the yard sale I went to a couple weeks ago .. I also found 3 boxes of tapered evening candles for $0.50 a box with 5 candles in each box.

You know I snagged all of them.  I knew exactly what I wanted to do .. Stripe them out!!   It was so quick and easy and I love how it gave them a bit more elegance.

All I did was tape them up and gave a quick spray of metallic gold.  Let dry and now I have a pair of striped gold candles.  I saved a few dollars by getting vintage candles from the yard sale and doing it myself.  The best part is I’ve got several candles to make different colors and styles with at a fraction of the cost.

So the next time you’re at a yard sale, a thrift store or even Goodwill.. get those candles!  Every little bit savings counts.

Another thrifty idea by your Urvintage Girl!  Tah-tah!!

Fab Find Friday

Happy Friday everyone – I have to say I’ve been feeling a little bluesy – not the emotional kind bluesy – but the music tunes bluesy.  I thought I’d share one of my favorite tunes with you in this post.  Koko Taylor, who is the Queen of the Blues sings this song which reflects how I felt at the time I found this week’s fab find.   They call me the “Hunter” ! cause I’m always on the hunt for some fab finds, thrifty deals and terrific scores.  But before I show you, I would like to share some terrific news!  I won’t be doing too much blogging in the next coming weeks (please don’t get too excited about that part -hahaha) buuuuuttt.. guess what???  I’m opening a shop  – Yayyyyy !!!!  Yes, finally YourVintage Girl is back in business.   We (meaning me, my sister Amina and our dear friend/ business partner Renee ) have decided to open the second location of Pieces of Time Antiques.  We have a space in new Jersey – and now one in South Carolina.  So I’ll be busy setting up shop, but I’ll touch base with you from time to time – so please – don’t forget about me..  🙂

Ok..let’s move on to my Hunted Item –  I’ve haven’t been getting too lucky lately but just when I was ready to give up shopping at this particular Goodwill, my woman’s intuition decided to give it one more try.  I popped in there, walked straight to the back and look what I found sitting on top of a table – all by it’s lonesome self – waiting for me to strike – the catch that I was after….

O00ooo weeee… ain’t He sweet!!!       A Franco Albini pouff ottoman… Talk about a Teeeeerific Score!!  Remember I already had one that I posted about here.   The price was even of a shocker — $9.75  Can you say WHAT!!!! SHUT THE EFEN DOOR!!!!  – cause that’s exactly what I said…   naturally I gave it a quick inspection.   The only thing wrong was this little paint splash – which will be removed.

Ain’t no  need to hide – ain’t no need to run – cause I’ve got you in the sight of my — Luuuv gun  😉

I love these ottomans  and so does my twin.  She’s been wanting one. .. so now I have one and she has one !! Just in time for our birthday – so pre-Happy Birthday Amina!!  It’s Yours!!

So… I guess I’ll dub myself the “Hunter”  – thanks to Koko and her bluesy song.  I hope you all have a good-feeling bluesy weekend!  Smooches!

It’s All Set!

Friday is finally here and your thrifty gal was on a roll this week.  Began the garden weeding (which I hate so much – I wish the plants would grow as fast as the weeds.. uggghhhh!! WEEDS BEGONE!! but the beds are looking fuller.  I finally painted the porch swing and completed that cozy space and last but not least for this week’s projects… I found the paint color to match the chairs.  Remember these – my thrifty score for $25.00

They were paired with my lonely table.

Well.. I found the matching color which is “Lafonda Mirage” by Valspar and now it’s all a set. I’m too thrilled about this set.  I’ve developed a love for rattan and this set was all thrift store deals.  The table base was $30.00 purchased years ago.. the glass top was taken from another table that was rickety..(perfect fit).. the chairs completed the look.  Total cost for this look $85.75

The outdoor rug was purchased on line from World Market  for $19.99 but it’s actually on sale for $9.99 (drats).  I should have waited.. oh well.. my lost.. chuckles.. can’t win them all..

Remember the wall vase? (you can see the before here) I  added some faux seasonal flowers and sprayed some tree branches

I was on a spray craze, and also did the placemats.. What the heck.. they were only $0.75 cents.. chuckles..

The adorable little vase was another Goodwill purchase.. for $2.75.  I fell in love with the color and how it’s accented with the little white dots (it was made handmade pottery by someone name Amy Sizemore in 2002  – how I know – she signed the bottom)

I know, cute little toss pillows are missing but that’s ok… they’ll come in due time…but in the meantime, it’s perfect to enjoy breakfast, smoothies, lunch or dinner on the deck.  Time for me to take a little rest and I hope you all have a smooth-ie weekend!  Ciao!

Swing Along

I can’t believe how fast summer is going.  It seems like yesterday I worked on this corner of my porch, but it’s been over two weeks.  I finally got the paint for the swing on other half.  I found it in the “oops” section at Lowes.. It’s a pretty mint green.    Here’s the swing that needs updating.  I bought it a few years ago at a yard sale for $20.00.  I never painted it but realize it’s time for a new look.

So, I cranked up some mood music to get me going and let the paint party begin.  Two hours later and this is the new look:

Added a few extra items to cozy up the space and here it is completed;

The chain and iron arms were spray painted silver metallic.  The little marble top table (belonged to my belated grandmother) use to look like this but was updated with a quick white spray paint.  It use to have a glass top but I broke it..(uggghhh) luckily I kept this marble piece that was on another table that has been disgarded.. (the hoarder in me) – so I married the two and they look pretty good together.  The blue bottle (Italian made glass) was a Goodwill find for $2.75.

It’s a perfect place to kick your sneakers off and gently swing while reading a magazine

The wicker stool was picked up at a yard sale while I was in Jersey last week  for $3.00

The vintage macrame plant holder was a thrift store find for $2.00.   I’ve been contemplating to have the caribbean  art framed.. I decided I will once I find the right frame for the right price.

The only thing left is to find the perfect light fixture to complete the look.. I’m still hunting and will be happy when I find it.   But in the meantime, I’ll just swing along in another cozy (thrifted) space.

4poster Box Bed

Well today I set out to finish up Ms.  Koko’s bedroom bed..  Thank God the weather was beautiful because I really wanted to get these projects done…. So here we go.. gathering up all the items needed.. (not that it was alot) and we’re headed outside..  Here’s the box we started with

KoKo  is nearby probably wondering what’s going on….

If she guessed a new bed…. SHE’S RIGHT!!

Remember this one will go in our bedroom so I’m have to make it match the room… (don’t want a sore thumb sticking out).. I painted the box and started thinking what else.. hmmm, tap, tap, tap, hmmmm ahhhha I got it!  When you have a yard full of these why not use a few..

So I got four and a couple of sticks to decorate the box with – first let’s do something with the color..  a touch of gold paint did the trick..I used the sticks to create the letter “K”

The box is all dry – now it’s time to decorate.. I added more bling to the box with the crystals I got previously and from Cassie…   I’m very pleased with her 4poster box bed    🙂

It matches the color of the chair it sits next to… “you can see that rags to riches story about the lovely chair here.”

But the real test is to see if KoKo approves… let’s go get her…  “Ooohh KoKo – come here girl..”

Yes!!!  I think she definitely likes it!!

I guess all this hard work has made her sleepy….. time for her nap
