It’s been a week since I’ve been back from going home for Thanksgiving and I’m still reminiscing in the wonderful time I had visiting family.  I’d like to share my short story about the visit and staying with my twin.  It’s just amazing how even though we live hundreds of miles apart, when I go to her house – it’s like home away from home.. seriously.  Down to the point of when I look in her cabinet to cook something – we even have the same spices.. chuckles.. it’s really something to think about.  The week prior to my visit I had been playing a particular cd alot..”Caron Wheeler” the cd I used in my Lite as a Feather post.. I love the entire cd..well – I get to her house.. and guess what.. she has it playing in her kitchen (just like me).. now this is the odd part.. We were playing the same music in our homes not knowing it.  I gave her a copy of that cd at least a year ago and she said “Kim – I just put this cd in last week for the first time and love – every song!”  Inside I was perturbed because I thought “what took you so long”  but somehow she must have read my face and quickly said..”I know it took a long time, but I’ve been listening to so many cds our aunt Pookie (who is another music buff) had been giving her that she just hadn’t taken the time to listen.. but now she’s regretting it took so long because she loves it..)  That made me happy.  But moving along because I could write a book about us…chuckles..  My sister’s home is so lovely and she (like me) had to completely re-do her home.. I guess we’re just suckers for a good challenge -whereas some people prefer move-in ready to decorate… not us.   I’m just going to share a few snapshots I took of her home.  Her kitchen is just a warm friendly place to be in.  The color tones of yellow, red, black and white are just so welcoming.  When she asked me to make her curtains I was happy to do so, but to see that she still has them makes me smile.  They were simple to make and it’s a rewarding feeling to know that I helped add to her beautiful kitchen.  I adore this vignette around her table.  The picture you see above “Sisters” hugging.. well that was a birthday card I gave her at least 15 years ago.. she had it framed and you see where it hangs 🙂

The other pictures are a tasteful blend of vintage & modern prints

Her Dining Room is the crowned jewel of her home. The rich tone of chocolate brown and keylime walls trimmed in gold is absolutely gorgeous.

Her artwork adds to the beauty of the room – with each piece custom framed to her selection

Pulling all her vintage furniture pieces together to create this fabulous look was truly tastefully accomplished.

The Living Room, which is equally stunning, was also completely redesigned.  Her old mantel was torn out and her husband  handcrafted a newly design mantel to her liking – and customizing a border around the art was another creative special touch.

This is the front view of her beautiful fireplace

Gorgeous!!  Isn’t it??

I also love the vintage desk and how she has it displayed with the exquisite artwork above it.

Mind you, every fabulous piece of furniture was found in thrift stores lovingly refinished – because that’s how we Vintage girls love to do it.  The song I chose for this post is called “Special”.. because that’s what she is to me.. and as the lyric says “sisterly bond is worth more than gold” and those words are never more true.   I know you’re probably wondering why I chose the name for this post.  Well,  it comes from my aunt who always says “we’re joined at the hips” and after hearing my short story I’m sure you can agree.

I hope you enjoyed your visit of my sister’s home, and I hope you enjoyed the “Special” tune I played for you.

$2.00 Tuesday #4

For a moment I was worried about not finding something for my fun post.  This $2.00 Tuesday is really pretty cool.  The main objective is that I do not to go crazy looking for things and also make sure I need or could use it.  Well, so far so good..  If you’re just joining me..Welcome… you can see my other $2.00 posts here, here, and here.   Today’s goodie came from the thrift store here in Whitmire, again.  I remember seeing it when I was there getting the plant hangers.  So, I decided to go back to inquire about it…. and sure enough.. it was $2.00…LOL.. I know you’re probably thinking.. “Is she for real – how could it be -that she’s finding this stuff“,  but I kid you not.. it sure was $2.00 (and no haggling..)..

A HAT RACK….. How Cool is That!!!     It was hanging on the wall with some baskets on it…  I simply asked.. is that for sale and she replied – looking over her glasses with her hand on her hip…. “Honey, everything in here is for sale 🙂  …and it was $2.00 (with the baskets.. which I did’t take – but something tells me I should have – because you never know when you’ll need a basket..)  oh well…

Well, it was was in perfect condition (except for the dust) which is a easy fix.  But I just didn’t want to keep it in the natural state.  I had a tiny bit of paint left over and decided to spruce it up.. Besides it was going to hang in the laundry area so the color would blend with the curtains.  I used the Avocado left over from this project

That’s what it needed for a new look

Well let’s get it inside to put it to use..  Every time I have to walk Ms. Koko, it never fails, I forget where I left her leash and have to go looking for it and my cap… well no more.. they have their place..

I do believe I scored on this one too!!!!

As always…IT’S VivaLaVintage – Baby!  Like I said.. this is getting kind of fun…  See you next Tuesday..(I hope)

$2.00 Tuesday #2

Hey there, last week I started a $2.00 Tuesday post.. I’m going to continue with them as long as I can find $2.00 items.. and you know something.. I think it’s kind of fun, too,… knowing I can actually get something so cheap that I could really make use of.    I found this week’s item at the thrift store here in town.   I usually don’t get to visit it because they’re closed on Saturdays ( not good).. but I lucked up because they’ll be open on Saturdays until Christmas  (GREAT!)

Well, here’s what I found tucked in the back…. chuckles…. I know what you’re thinking… “Good Lord – I haven’t seen those in years” LOL…  but guess what… they’re sturdy and I know could use them.    Here’s the clincher .. all three for $2.00.  Last week I was happy with the one plant hanger… so you know this week I’m freaking ecstatic  🙂   YIPPEEE!!!!      (don’t mind the leaves in the backdrop.. they’re everywhere..sooo tired of raking leaves..sigh)  🙁

The solid beige one was .50 cents and the other two.. .75 cents (chuckles..)   can’t beat it… RIGHT!  I’m not too fond of the colors or the big fuzzy ball at the end

but  since it’s Fall.. and they are Fall colors – it’ll work for now.    I’ll decide later whether to change the colors (of course spray paint would do the job) or not.    I gave them a try and put a couple of plants inside them.. (just to show for the post – but tomorrow I’m headed to the nursery to get a few plants to put in them..   Here’s how they look with a plant inside..

They are absolutely perfect for outside hangers.. the cording is extremely durable..

After seeing them… I think I really LUCKED UP!

A $2.00 Tuesday

Hey there! This is a quickie that I have to show you.  Last Tuesday I was headed to lunch and passed this little thrift shop – I’ve been meaning to stop in there but every time I passed – it was closed. Well, I got lucky, it was open.  So I walked in (and for the life of me- I can’t figure out why do they all have that same “old” smell..chuckles.. oh well.. moving right along…I did my usual eyescope around the store.. Nothing caught my eye. Just as I was about to head out the door I looked up and caught this plant holder. Remember these..

Well needless to say it was $2.00 and you know it came home with me.  I spruced it up and hung another one of my babies in it.   Love the  shells..  I had a little left over from the plant stand and decided to use it on the pot.

Avocado

And now comes the plant….

not bad huh?? for $2.00 .  Did you ever come across a $2.00 fab find..?  If so, please share.  I would love to hear about it or send me a picture so I feature it on the blog..  till next time…. ta-ta..

Make Me Over

I’ve had a love of make-overs for quite some time. For the next few weeks I’ll be featuring “make me over” Mondays, which is paying tribute to the lovingly restored items found along the way. It’s  an intriguing feeling when you see a once lovely piece of furniture thrown away without regard or care and thinking can it be revived.  I remember how we use to get anxious about bulk trash night wondering what will be the next trash to treasure we’ll find.  There have been many long nights spent cruising neighborhoods looking for things thrown away because they no longer want it, or it’s broken down or things that they believe are hopeless.  Such is the story of this antique slipper chair.  It’s apparent this chair has been stuck in someone’s attic for so many years and the family finally decided to let it go and decided to trash it. Well as fate would have it.. it was destined to be mine.  I looked at it  and tried figure out what happened to it… why would someone mistreat it,  or to even say  why would it be so black and blue.  I know  people thought I was crazy out my mind for thinking about putting this in the backseat of the car.  But I couldn’t resist.  It was love at first sight.  I could clearly see the beauty this chair once had.  So, it was scooped up by me.. and  when I brought  it home.. All my husband and sons could think was…”She’s really crazy”..  but.. I shrugged them off and said, now just wait and see..”

I know you’re probably saying the same thing ….chuckles…. but look closely at the chair.. .. do you see – what I see???  notice the wire springs, the detail of the shape.. and look at the back.. it was stuffed with horse hair and cotton fiber.. which means this chair has quite some age on it.. probably turn of the century.  It’s clearly this darling little chair has suffered quite a bit of abuse over the years and is screaming  “HELP!”  for some loving soul to save it.

I figured this was going to be a tough job it restore it back to its original beauty.  I had to recruit the best upholsterer in town and had to find the best fabric to really enhance  it’s beauty.  Since I wasn’t  in  a big rush I took my time.  After months of searching, I found the right fabric that would enhance the beauty of the chair.  Now comes the feeling of excitement .. knowing she’s getting ready for her new look.  When I got the ” your chair is ready” call.. my heart became overjoyed and asked “how did it turn out?  He replied.. wait till you see it.. with a smile..  I rushed over to pick her up and needless to say he got a big hug!  What a wonderful transformation. I brought her home and here she is:   Isn’t she lovely… made from love..  This was her place in my bedroom to complete the vintage look.

Since this picture we’ve moved and she still looks just as wonderful in my vintage bedroom we now have

I am truly happy with my little slipper chair.. It’s a great feeling knowing she didn’t wind up in the dumpster waiting to be destroyed.

It was well worth it..
